Family and Community Medicine

Home

Family Medicine was founded on the belief that all people should have access to physicians trained to diagnose and manage the wide range of medical problems found in primary care settings.

At Meharry, we believe that "health" is a holistic state of well being and our team is dedicated to helping individuals, families and communities reach a state of health through our efforts in providing patient care services, education and research.

Mission
Our mission is to provide exemplary comprehensive patient care commensurate with the heritage and mission of Meharry Medical College; and to offer the highest quality educational experiences to our medical students and residents, with a strong focus on healthcare disparity issues.
This department is committed to a broad range of training experiences that provide the ability to function effectively in underserved settings. Our faculty, staff, and residents have a responsibility to maintain medical, educational, and administrative excellence in all of their activities, and are supported in developing leadership skills through scholarship, presentation, and publication.

History
Meharry Family & Community Medicine was established in 1974 and became a full department in July 1980. The department has since merged with the Divisions of Occupational Medicine, Preventive Medicine, the Center for Community-based Training and Research, and the Center for Nutrition. These collaborative relationships provide opportunities for health research, joint residency training, shared resources, and many other mutual benefits.

Meharry Medical College, established in 1876, occupies a 26 acre setting in the heart of Nashville, the capital of Tennessee. Nashville is situated on the Cumberland River in Central Tennessee, roughly equidistant from Memphis and Atlanta. Meharry Medical College is the largest private, comprehensive, historically black institution for educating health professionals and scientists in the United States.
